Application Period Now Open for 2022 Adaptation Academy
The CASTT Adaptation Academy programme for adaptation reporting enters its second year
———
Beginning Monday, 23 May individuals can now apply to take part in the second year of the Adaptation Academy. Under the broader umbrella of the UNFCCC’s Climate Action Support and Transparency Training (CASTT) initiative, the Adaptation Academy is designed to provide in-depth technical training for national adaptation focal points and others working on national climate policymaking, with a special emphasis on assessment and reporting aspects of national adaptation actions as part of their biennial transparency reports.
The UNFCCC’s secretariat helps to orchestrate the program alongside the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation. Other partners include the renowned learning and research institutions Asian Institute of Technology, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, Korea Environment Institute, and Oregon State University.
The 2021 Adaptation Academy was hosted virtually at three regional hubs focusing on Asia-Pacific, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean. Feedback to the first year’s coursework was overwhelmingly positive, with over 400 global applicants. Representatives of 70 countries were selected to take part in the training, learning from topical experts and engaging in cross-cultural knowledge exchanges as part of an effort to build a stronger community of practice among those involved in national adaptation programming.
The 2022 course will take place in-person at IHE Delft in the Netherlands, with plans for an expanded in-person program with three regional hubs again in 2023. Topics for the Adaptation Academy include: reporting on impacts, risks, and vulnerabilities; developing adaptation strategies, policies, plans, goals, and actions; and monitoring and evaluation of adaptation actions and processes. Participants will gain a better understanding of the official UNFCCC reporting processes — particularly around the Enhanced Transparency Framework — as well as the latest science around adaptation planning and risk assessments.
Participation in the three-week Adaptation Academy will come at no-cost to those attending, with representatives from developing countries encouraged to apply. The course will run from 5-23 September 2022 in Delft, The Netherlands. The deadline to apply is 30 June.
