Background
From 30 November to 12 December, Heads of State, ministers, and negotiators, along with accredited observer organizations, climate activists, civil society representatives and CEOs will meet in Dubai for the largest annual gathering on climate action. The 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – COP28 – will build on the outcomes of COP27 to deliver action on an array of issues critical to tackling the climate emergency.
In the run-up to COP28, there are some important global climate processes taking place, where water and sanitation need to feature prominently, and that will culminate at COP28. Those include the conclusion of the First Global Stocktake (GST), the definition of the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), and the operationalization of the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF).
SWA and AGWA aim to start mobilizing their network for collective action via two initial informational webinars scheduled for 24 May. The objective is to brief AGWA and SWA partners and focal points in countries on the global climate processes (GST, GGA, ET) that are taking place in the run-up to COP28, and discuss the action at global and national levels to positively influence those processes, ensuring the right inclusion of water, sanitation and hygiene.
The webinars will include the participation of key stakeholders engaged in the shaping of global climate policy, as well as showcase how countries are influencing national processes and positions. The webinars will also provide the opportunity to discuss how water and sanitation stakeholders can liaise and brief their country's climate counterparts and representatives so that we collectively help shape how water and sanitation will be reflected in the COP28 outcomes.
