Georgina Mukwirimba
WRT Graduate Student Researcher
Georgina is currently pursuing a master’s in water resources policy and management at Oregon State University. A drive to change the status quo of the global water challenges inspired her to study Civil and Water engineering for her undergraduate degree. Before her master’s studies, she was a Water and Sanitation Engineer at the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Zimbabwe. In UNOPS she implemented World Bank (WB) and African Development Bank-funded projects to rehabilitate and construct water, sanitation, and irrigation infrastructure following the devastating Cyclone Idai in 2019. At Oregon State University she is a research/teaching assistant, working on transboundary waters and particularly engaging various stakeholders in collaborative decision-making as well as developing holistic water security framework for basins.
Her passion for solving Water & environmental issues was further honed during an internship with UNESCO and continued participation in community engagement from an early age. Using the City Blueprint tool, she worked with UNESCO partners to assess the sustainability of urban water management in several African cities. Among many other engagements, she was a World Water Envoy for the International Water Resources Association, where she focused on the economics of water supply. Becoming a well-equipped water professional with a blend of skills is her first step toward a long-term-career goal, toward her bigger vision of solving the world's water & environmental challenges. She aims to contribute to the sustainable management of water resources by developing water and sanitation solutions that will shape the health of people and the planet. Strengthening action towards sustaining water resources, water delivery services, and building resilience are all urgent missions she wants to be part of.
